LTE Technical Overview

The delegate attending LTE Technical Overview training programme will gain an in depth appreciation of the architecture and operation of the LTE system including the OFDM based radio interface. As an introduction, the business of LTE and the evolution of mobile broadband are examined, and comparisons are made with HSPA and WiMAX systems. Possible LTE services are discussed and then used to describe the capabilities required of the radio and core network components. The architecture of the release 8 LTE network (SAE) is explained and the functions of each network node, MME S-GW, P-GW, eNB and interfaces X2 and S1 are discussed. The radio interface is based on OFDMA and supports advanced features such as MIMO and interference management. These concepts are explained, as well as other radio related topics such as IMT spectrum allocations. The LTE protocol stack and LTE procedures are also covered.

Why should you attend this course?

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the role of LTE in the future of mobile broadband
  • Explain the differences between the competing broadband standards
  • Draw the LTE network architecture
  • Describe the function of each LTE node
  • Explain the functions of the main interfaces of the LTE network
  • Show how LTE may inter-work with other networks
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of an OFDM based interface
  • Understand the basic timing structure of the LTE radio interface
  • List the logical, transport and physical channels used on the LTE radio interface
  • Explain the basic operation of MIMO and describe its advantages
  • Describe the functions of each layer of the LTE protocol stack
  • Describe the procedures for network entry and location management
  • Show how data bearers are setup and QoS is managed in the LTE system
  • Describe two methods of supporting voice services in LTE.
  • Show how IMS may be used to support services across the LTE network.
